How do I get started

To become a meat classifier, a person needs to undergo training in meat classification. The learner needs to complete a theoretical and practical evaluation by SAMIC. Any person with minimum grade 10 may register for the program.  Any applicant needs to register with a service provider before starting with the Meat Classification Course.

How to register for the Meat Classification Course

  1. Contact one of the Service providers (Refer to SAMIC’s website for the complete list)
  2. The Service provider will assist you to complete and submit the application.
  3. Upon successful registration you will receive a numbered manual (Study material).

 Note: The registration is valid for 9 months and will expire if not used.  Any fees paid will be forfeited.

  1. The Service provider will provide training and assist you with theoretical and practical training.
  2. A SAMIC Regional auditor/inspector will also assist with practical and theoretical training.
  3. When ready, the service provider will arrange for the assessment once the applicant is ready.
  4. The applicant will do two separate assessments, Meat Classification and Red Meat Classification Regulations. The assessment results will be available on the same day. 
  5. The pass rate for the assessments is a minimum of 50% on the Meat Classification and a minimum of 75% for the Red Meat Classification Regulations.
  6. If you do not achieve a passing score on an assessment the first time, you will have to wait at least 5 days before retaking the next assessments.
  7. If you do not achieve a passing score the second time, you will have to wait at least 14 days period before retaking the assessment a third time.  A 14-day waiting period will also be imposed for the fourth and fifth subsequent assessment retakes.  You may not take a given assessment any more than five times per year.
  8. After successful completion of the theory assessments, a date and venue can be arranged with the Regional Auditing Inspector from SAMIC for the practical assessment at a high throughput abattoir on the specie of their choice.
