Recognising the best: Producers take centre stage at Meat Festival

The 28th SAMIC National Carcass Competition Prize-giving Function, themed the “Meat Festival”, was held in collaboration with the South African Fatstock Judging Association (SAFJA) at The Blades Venue in Pretoria on 17 September 2026.

The event provided an important platform to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment, expertise, and hard work of livestock producers in producing high-quality meat that responds to consumer and market requirements. It brought together producers, industry organisations, government representatives, and other key stakeholders to celebrate excellence across the livestock value chain.

A key feature of the event was a panel discussion focusing on the relationship between scientific and sustainable feeding practices and the production of high-quality carcasses. The discussion provided an opportunity for industry stakeholders to exchange knowledge and perspectives on how sound nutritional management and sustainable production practices can contribute to improved carcass quality and overall production performance.

The competition recognised outstanding performance across both the commercial and emerging producer categories, with winners honoured in beef, lamb, goat, and pork categories. The Meat Festival therefore served not only as a platform for recognising excellence in carcass production, but also as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between producers, industry bodies, and government while promoting sustainable practices and continuous improvement within South Africa’s livestock and meat industry.
